Carnaval of Spirit Love

About the Exhibit

The Art of Women of Culture...

The Black Indigenous Women Of Culture (BIWOC) in the community of
Musea began their journey together in 2021. We met monthly, engaging the
question: “What is the authentic expression of our identity?”

When we wanted a theme for an art call that would showcase our collective
works, we chose the iconic image of Carnaval to represent the process and
journey of coming into a cultural identity.

The spirit that comes alive at Carnaval time can be found in many countries
throughout the world. It is a beautiful expression of joy and community,
celebrating together the fullness of life with abandon. It is also a time when
the veil between the physical and ancestral worlds is particularly porous
and navigable.

The paintings featured in this exhibit “The Carnaval Of Spirit Love” are an
answer to that call.

Together, we invite you to experience the honoring of ancestral lineages,
connect with the cultural story of each artist, and celebrate the spirit and
beauty of women of color and culture.

This exhibit is a collaborative project with curation from the BIWOC
leadership team including: Elder Semerit Strachan, Elder Lauren Adorno-
Weatherford, Sumaiyah Yates, Milagros Suriano-Rivera, in coordination
with Musea Curator, Shiloh Sophia and Curatorial Director, Amber Gould.

Welcome to the Gallery. We hope you enjoy the show!
